Sing or Dare

I got this idea from the blog: Singing Time in Fort Worth.  This is a great way to review songs that the kids are learning.  I printed out Sing Cards and Dare Cards on 3x5 cards.  The Sing Cards are different, fun ways to sing a certain verse.  The Dare Cards ask the kids to do funny things or answer a question.  Sing Cards go in the Sing pocket and the Dare Cards go in the Dare pocket.  Here are the different items printed on the cards:

  • Draw a picture of your favorite food
  • Give everyone a high-five
  • Give the primary presidency a high five
  • Give your teacher a hug
  • Hop on one foot around the podium 3 times
  • Name 2 latter day prophets
  • Name all the members of in the Bishopric
  • Name the First Presidency of the Church
  • Name the two months we have General Conference
  • Name three temples

  • Pick a “Sing” Card and help lead the music
  • Shake the hand of each teacher in the room
  • Stand on your chair and shout "I love primary!"
  • Switch seats with someone else
  • Tell the names of everyone in your class

UNO

I got this idea from the LDS Primary Choristers Facebook Page. Break up a song into four different parts.  Print each of those parts onto an 8 ½ X 11 sheet of paper and stick them onto the corresponding colors.  Have a deck of UNO cards, but only pull out the 1, 2, 3 (only if you want - I didn’t use 3), and 0 (for the Chorus) of each of the colors (red, blue, yellow, and green), also pull out the Wild Cards.  Call on a child to help, if they pull out a Blue 2 from your deck, then you sing the phrase that is in the blue section twice.  If they pull a Yellow 1, then they sing the phrase that is in the yellow section once.  The Wild Card allows them to choose whatever part of the song they would like.  Then repeat.  This was so much fun!  The graphic was downloaded from the LDS Primary Choristers Facebook Page.  (LOVE that group!)  Graphic Link.

New Year's Singing Time

Here is fun idea I got from Primary Singing Time Ideas. Every year people set New Year's Resolutions.  How can Primary Songs help us set some good goals and New Year's Resolutions?  Here is a list of various goals/resolutions we may have.  I have the goals/resolutions on the board and the kids take turns flipping them over to find out what song will help us achieve our goals.
  • I will know and understand that I am a child of God; and that He loves me. - I Am a Child of God, p. 2
  • We can be kind and helpful to others by doing good deeds. - I Have Two Little Hands, p. 272 (only 1 verse)
  • We can try to be more like Jesus every day. - I'm Trying to Be Like Jesus, p. 78 (only 1 verse)
  • You can show gratitude to Heavenly Father. - My Heavenly Father Loves Me, p. 228
  • We can choose to be happy. - Smiles, p. 267
  • We can bear our testimony more. - I Know my Father Lives, p. 5
  • We can follow God's plan. - I Will Follow God's Plan, p. 164
  • We can listen more closely to the Holy Ghost. - Listen, Listen, p. 107
  • We can be a better member missionary by inviting our friends to church. - We’ll Bring the World His Truth, p. 172
  • We can learn to obey our Mom and Dad better. - Quickly I’ll Obey, p. 197
  • We can be better about sharing things we have been blessed with. - “Give,” Said the Little Stream, p. 236
  • We can be more reverent when we are at church on Sunday. - The Chapel Doors, p. 156

Top Songs of the year

I have started off the last few years with the Previous Years Top Songs.  How do I found out these song?  Well, we have a California Snowball Fight.  "What is a California Snowball Fight?" you ask.  I give every child and adult two pieces of paper.  They are supposed to write their favorite Primary Song on those papers.  Then after we have our lesson for the day, we take those papers, crumple them up, and start throwing them at each other.  The kids LOVE it!  Then I come back the next week with a tally of what songs got the most votes and we sing those songs.  Simple and fun!

Snow Much Fun to Sing

I found Snow Much Fun to Sing on I Heart Primary Music.  I altered her plan a little.  My idea was for the kids to throw my "snowballs" (the are foam balls I found at Michaels) at the igloo.  If they made it in the big opening, then they had to pick one of my snowflakes that have songs written on them.  If they made it into one of the small holes, they could pick any song they wanted.  The kids love when they are allowed to throw things in Primary.

Symbols of Christmas

Christmas is such a crazy time with so many different traditions and things going on.  I wanted to help the kids remember the real meaning of Christmas by looking at all the different symbols they see at Christmas Time. I hid the cards with the different pictures/symbols on them and let the kids search for them.  Then we talked about each symbol and how it helps us remember Christ.
  • Bells: Rings to bring lost sheep home. - Christmas Bells, p. 54
  • Bow: Tied in the bonds of brotherly love. - Once within a Lowly Stable, p. 41
  • Candles: Jesus said that He is the light of the world. He shows us the way to go and leads us with His light. - There Was Starlight on the Hillside, p. 40
  • Candy Canes: This candy is made in the shape of a shepherd’s staff. The shepherds came to see baby Jesus. Christ is known as the good shepherd. - The Shepherd’s Carol, p. 40
  • White: White represents the purity of Christ (he was perfect). - Mary’s Lullaby
  • Gifts: Giving, sharing, thinking of others. Gifts represent the gifts the wise men brought to the Christ child and the gift of the Savior that Heavenly Father gave the world.
  • Candy Cane: Shepherd’s crook for bringing lambs back to the fold. - Picture a Christmas, p. 50
  • Christmas Tree (Green): Christmas trees are evergreen trees. They do not die in the winter, but stay green all year.  This is a symbol of eternal life. Christ made it possible for us to live forever in heaven after we die. The evergreen of everlasting life, pointing heavenward. - Samuel Tells of Baby Jesus, p. 36
  • Red: The Savior’s sacrifice for all.  Red represents the blood of Christ. - He Sent His Son, p. 34
  • Santa Claus: The spirit of Christmas, giving and receiving love, caring, sharing, kindness, cheerfulness, happiness, peace, good will to all, Christlike living. - When Joseph Went to Bethlehem, p. 38
  • Star: The Bethlehem star, a sign of prophecy, the light of the world. - Stars were Gleaming, p. 37
  • Wreath: Eternal love, no beginning, no end.  Love comes full circle. - Away in a Manger, p. 42

Christmas Tree

I needed something simple and easy on Sunday.  What is more simple and easy than a Christmas Tree with ornaments?  Each ornament has a song we reviewing/singing and the kids take turns coming up to pick their ornament/song.
